C/O Berlin Talent Award 2024—Theorist

DAS TALENT-FÖRDERPROGRAMM

Seit 2006 fördert die C/O Berlin Foundation den künstlerischen und wissenschaftlichen

Nachwuchs. Mehr als 80 Talente wurden seither mit Ausstellungen und

Publikationen einem breiten Publikum vorgestellt, darunter die Fotokünstler:innen

Karolina Wojtas, Anna Ehrenstein, Stefanie Moshammer und Tobias Zielony sowie

die Fototheoretiker:innen Emmanuel Iduma, Jule Hillgärtner, Christin Müller, Heide

Häusler.

DER C/O BERLIN TALENT AWARD

Der C/O Berlin Talent Award ist ein in Europa einmaliger Förderpreis, der Praxis und

Theorie gleichermaßen auszeichnet. Er wird jährlich in den Disziplinen künstlerische

Fotografie (Artist) und fototheoretisches Schreiben (Theorist) ausgelobt und ist

mit einem Preisgeld von insgesamt 10.000 € dotiert (7,000 € für die Artist-Position/

3,000 € für die Theorist-Position). C/O Berlin produziert mit der prämierten Artist-

Position eine Einzelausstellung und eine ausstellungsbegleitende Publikation im

Spector Books Verlag. Aufgabe der Theorist-Position ist es, einen Essay über die

ausgewählte Arbeit zu schreiben und ein Interview mit dem:der Künstler:in zu

führen, die beide im Buch erscheinen. Seit 2020 wird der C/O Berlin Talent Award

durch die Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung ermöglicht.

DAS THEMA

Der C/O Berlin Talent Award steht unter dem Leitthema New Documentary

Strategies. Ziel ist es, eine kritische Betrachtung traditioneller dokumentarischer

Narrative anzuregen und zu fördern. Welche dokumentarische Rolle kommt der

Fotografie heute noch zu? Wie hat sich unser Vertrauen in das Medium durch den

Umgang mit „networked images“ verändert? Welche neuen Erzählstrategien

werden entwickelt, um die Ereignisse, die unsere Welt aktuell prägen, zu verstehen

und zu erinnern? Die mit dem C/O Berlin Talent Award 2024 ausgezeichnete Arbeit

in der Kategorie Artist thematisiert die Verwurzelung von Sprach-und Zeichensystemen

in kolonialen Machtstrukturen. Durch eine Verbindung von Vergangenheit und

Gegenwart beleuchtet das Projekt, wie sich die koloniale Unterdrückung Afrikas

noch heute im Gebrauch ›westlicher‹ Kommunikationssysteme widerspiegelt.

DAS AUSWAHLVERFAHREN

Die Ermittlung der Preisträger:innen wird von zwei unabhängig voneinander agierenden

Fachjurys vorgenommen: Während Fotokünstler:innen für den Wettbewerb

nominiert werden (das Auswahlverfahren ist bereits abgeschlossen), können sich

Fototheoretiker:innen mit zwei bereits publizierten Textproben für diesen Open

Call bewerben. Aus den Einsendungen wählt C/O Berlin in Zusammenarbeit mit

Expert:innen aus der fototheoretischen und -historischen Publizistik eine:n

Gewinner:in.

Bitte reichen Sie Ihre Texte, die sich mit aktueller Fotografie im erweiterten Kontext

und thematisch mit dem Gewinner:innen-Projekt auseinandersetzen in deutscher

oder englischer Sprache bis zum 26. April 2024 über das Online-Formular ein.

C/O Berlin Talent Award 2024—Theorist

THE TALENT PROGRAM

Since 2006, C/O Berlin Foundation has been promoting young fine-art photographers

and photography theorists. Since then, more than 80 talents have been presented

to a wider audience through exhibitions and publications, including the artists

Karolina Wojtas, Anna Ehrenstein, Stefanie Moshammer, Sebastian Stumpf, and

Tobias Zielony as well as the photo theorists Emmanuel Iduma, Jule Hillgärtner,

Christin Müller, Heide Häusler.

The C/O BERLIN TALENT AWARD

The C/O Berlin Talent Award is the only prize of its kind in Europe. It recognizes

outstanding work in both photographic practice and theory. It is awarded annually in

the disciplines of artistic photography (Artist) and photo-theoretical writing (Theorist)

and is endowed with prize money of totally €10,000 (€7,000 for the Artist/ €3,000 for

the Theorist). C/O Berlin produces a solo exhibition with the award-winning Artist and

a publication with Spector Books to accompany it. The task of the Theorist is to write

an essay on the selected artwork and to conduct an interview with the Artist, both

of which will appear in the book. Since 2020, the C/O Berlin Talent Award is made

possible by the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung.

THE THEME

The C/O Berlin Talent Award’s central theme is New Documentary Strategies. The

aim is to support and encourage a critical approach to traditional documentary narratives.

To what extent does photography still function as a means of documentation?

How has our trust in the medium changed through the use of “networked images”?

What new narrative strategies are being developed to understand and remember the

events taking place in the world around us?

The work that received the C/O Berlin Talent Award 2024 in the Artist category

addresses the rootedness of language and sign systems in colonial power structures.

By combining past and present, the project sheds light on how Africa’s colonial

oppression is still reflected today in the use of ‘Western’ communication systems.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The winners of the C/O Berlin Talent Award will be selected by two juries of experts

acting independently of each other: While artists are nominated for the competition

(the selection process has already been completed), photo theorists can apply for

this Open Call with two already published text samples. C/O Berlin will select a

winner from the submissions in collaboration with experts from the field of phototheoretical

and photo-historical journalism.

Please submit your texts dealing with current photography in a broader context and

thematically related to the winning project in German or English until April 26, 2024
