Editorial

After publishing the 100th issue last November, EIKON went into 2018 with a number one, or, to be more precise, with the first of the next one hundred issues. Passing this mark, we now turn not only to our previous achievements but, most important, to the magazine’s immediate present and future, especially in the context of current demands, which are, of course, in constant flux due to the way our analog and digital worlds interweave. Publishing EIKON #101 was therefore the perfect occasion for a new beginning, which makes itself felt in meaningful additions to the content as well as an insightful adaptation of the design—without discarding what has thus far been deemed “good.”

In terms of content, the “Portfolio” section will be supplemented by artist interviews, thus giving a genre that has become a domain of many online publications a greater forum in print. At the same time, it fulfills the wish of many readers to get to know a more personal side of artmakers. Additionally, we want to show our respect to colleagues (publishers and artists) who, like ourselves, think highly of print media by calling attention to their publishing activities—ranging from handcrafted collector’s editions to new book publications. Finally, our exhibition calendar will be enhanced by recommendations from special guests, starting with Eva Sangiorgi, who just arrived from Mexico City to serve as the newly appointed director of the Viennale.

Let me take this opportunity to thank Jutta Wacht from Say Say Say Inc., with whom we’ve been successfully collaborating for the past few years, for a visual breath of fresh air. We also thank our team of copy editors and translators, some of whom have been working symbiotically with us for many years. Finally, we thank you, our subscribers and readers, hoping that this relaunch has given you one more reason for your continued loyalty.
